The Jackal is a fearless, sadistic, but highly intelligent arms-dealer whose weapons help fuel the violence in the country. And because you're the only mercenary brutal and effective enough to keep pace with him (now that all the mercenary and faction leaders are dead), you must die too.Food for thought, at any rate.
He knows he has to die in order for the war to finally wind down. It's a very valid question, and one that I think the game designers intended to leave open.Personally, I find the most compelling argument is that he had a change of heart or a moral breakdown somewhere along the way, and he realizes the enormity of what he's done.
